The CWO "Step Forward" session focused on encouraging more women to take on leadership roles within the Party. Chaired by Ahmereen Reza, Vice President of the National Convention and Party Board representative, the discussion highlighted the continuing under-representation of women in Party leadership and elected office, despite women making up over half of the UK population.
The session centred on three key principles for increasing women's participation in leadership: Championing women by actively supporting and promoting them; Clearing pathways by removing barriers and providing clear routes into leadership; and creating a Collaborative climate where women are valued and empowered to contribute.
Panel members Cllr Susan Coleman, Samia Hersi and Cllr Charlotte Vernon shared their personal leadership journeys, discussing the influences that shaped them, the challenges they have faced, and how they balance political, professional and personal responsibilities. The panel also highlighted the support available through CWO development programmes, mentoring initiatives, Widening Access, CCA training and Young Conservative networks.
Audience participation explored common barriers that discourage women from stepping forward, including lack of confidence, uncertainty about skills and not knowing where to begin. Panellists emphasised that leadership is developed through experience, mentoring and taking opportunities rather than waiting until one feels fully prepared.
The session concluded with practical advice and encouragement for women to take the next step into leadership, reinforcing the message that effective leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room, but about making a positive difference and creating opportunities for others.
